InBusiness’s Professional of the Week: Jacob R. Peters

By Alumni Relations

June 13, 2016

Most people probably wouldn’t imagine that accountant Jacob R. Peters (BBA ’00) has a richly creative side, but the CPA, MST, and senior tax manager at SVA Certified Public Accountants plays piano, guitar, drums, and saxophone. He even played in a band!

Apart from divulging his musical talents, Peters—who was recently named InBusiness’s Professional of the Week—gave insight into his life as one of Dane County’s successful professionals.

Peters recently completed a master’s degree from UW–Milwaukee and lists the most rewarding aspects of his job as also the most challenging—to keep up with the ever-changing tax laws and clients’ varying business situations. The reward, he says, comes from knowing you’ve successfully navigated such a dynamic field and helped someone along the way.

Although staying on top of things can be a challenge, Peters looks to figures like Coach John Wooden and Neil deGrasse Tyson for inspiration in leadership, business, and maintaining professional relationships.

As a CPA, Peters says he works longer hours in the winter months but has a more flexible schedule for the summer, during which he takes “mini-vacations” every weekend with his wife and two sons. The best thing about living and working in Dane County, he says, is the possibility for weekend adventures camping, canoeing, or biking in the Madison area.
