Biography

Mary holds both a Bachelor of Science in Accountancy degree and a Master of Accounting Science degree from Northern Illinois University. Upon graduation, she began working in the tax department of Miller, Cooper & Co, a mid-sized public accounting firm based in Chicago. After gaining experience in public accounting, Mary moved on to wealth management at RMB Capital Management, a Registered Investment Advisory firm. Mary began the UW-Madison Accounting PhD program in Fall 2016. Mary’s research interests include corporate tax avoidance, multinational taxation and tax avoidance, and Federal tax policy.



In 2019, Mary Vernon was a recipient of the Deloitte Foundation's 2019 Doctoral Fellowships in Accounting. The Deloitte Foundation awards 10 fellowships to the top accounting PhD candidates across the country. The award includes a $25,000 grant to support the coursework and dissertation stages of the candidate's PhD program.
