Recent name changes at the Wisconsin School of Business help bring greater focus to the strengths of two disciplines.
The Stephen L. Hawk Center for Applied Securities Analysis is now the Hawk Center for Investment Analysis, changing names but keeping in place a mission as a preeminent academic center for applied investment education.
“By renaming the Center, we reinforce the idea that the Center is the ‘umbrella’ that includes a variety of applied learning programs, classes, industry events, and other activities,” says Mark Ready, faculty director of the Hawk Center, academic chair of the Department of Finance, Investment, and Banking, and the Jeffrey J. Diermeier Chair in Finance, Investment, and Banking.The goal of the name change was to clarify the focus of the knowledge center and help prospective students and employers immediately understand the types of career opportunities available. The change also helps distinguish the Center name and that of its namesake program, the Applied Security Analysis Program. The program name remains unchanged.
Another change went into effect earlier in the year as the Department of Actuarial Science, Risk Management, and Insurance changed its name to the Department of Risk and Insurance.
“We believe the name Risk and Insurance better reflects our expanded domain of knowledge,” Schmit says.The name change communicates more of the full breadth of the department as it has grown and expanded in numbers of students and areas of interest, says Joan Schmit, academic chair of the Department of Risk and Insurance, professor of risk and insurance, and the American Family Insurance Distinguished Chair of Risk Management and Insurance. The change reflects the department’s long history in actuarial science, risk management, and insurance, Schmit says, while also encompassing the added fields of data analytics, behavioral science, predictive modeling, and other areas.
