For many undergraduate students at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, the college experience never takes a break—even in summer. As the spring semester comes to a close, students are trying to figure out the best way to spend May through August, whether that’s jobs, internships, vacations, or classes.
Students who are looking to get ahead on courses for the next semesters, or need to squeeze in some courses before they study abroad, can take advantage of the Wisconsin School of Business’s Summer Term.
Whether students take one short class or stay all summer for multiple courses, Summer Term gives undergraduates from a variety of majors a chance to take the courses they need—on campus or online.
“Participating in Summer Term greatly impacted my college experience, as it allowed me to take a semester off to pursue an internship in Sydney, Australia,” says finance major Hannah Patzer (BBA ’19), who took Introduction to Finance and Introductory Managerial Accounting while on campus last summer.
“Without taking the summer course this would not have been possible, and I would not have been able to graduate in four years. Thanks to Summer Term, I was able to experience the semester abroad of a lifetime and still am able to walk with my peers for graduation in May 2019!”
Maddy Hottinger (BBA ’19), who is majoring in marketing and real estate, took two WSB classes online last Summer Term and found them a perfect remedy to her hectic academic and professional schedule. “Taking summer courses online gave me the flexibility I needed to work full time and stay on track to graduate in four years.”
“Taking courses in the summer gave me the opportunity to take more classes that interest me and graduate with a certificate along with my two majors,” Hottinger adds.
This year, WSB is offering nearly 50 business courses including popular on-campus courses like Introduction to Finance (FIN 300), Operations Management (OTM 300), and Managerial Accounting (AIS 211). Marketing Management (MKT 300) and Managing Organizations (MHR 300) will be among WSB’s online offerings.
Courses run from May to August, varying in length from three to eight weeks. Things start off right after spring semester with a quick three-week session.
Taking courses from WSB during Summer Term provides students with an opportunity to get high-quality instruction from the School they already know. There is no need to reapply and enrollment is open now.
Kristin Determan, BBA director of academic affairs and advising at WSB, says Summer Term is a natural extension of the top-notch learning experience students get throughout the academic year. “I’m very excited about our course offerings for this summer. We’ve grown Summer Term quite a bit and are thrilled to be able to serve more students by providing the courses they need to further their education and be prepared for today’s business world.”
For students staying around Madison for any length of time, there’s a lot to enjoy. “Madison in the summer was an incredible experience,” reflects Patzer. “Some of my favorite memories include paddleboarding on Lake Mendota, eating Babcock ice cream while watching the sunset at the Union, and getting fresh cheesy bread from the famous Madison farmers’ market! I loved it so much that I will be returning again to spend this summer here as well.”
