The Graduate Master of Accountancy (GMAcc) program at the Wisconsin School of Business is designed for students who have already completed an undergraduate degree, generally in something other than accounting. The only course prerequisite for the program is an introductory financial accounting course, which can be taken after admission to the program. Many admitted students will take an introductory financial accounting course at UW-Madison during the summer prior to starting the GMAcc program.
Students who are pursuing an undergraduate degree in accounting at the Wisconsin School of Business and wish to earn a Master of Accountancy degree should consider the Integrated Master of Accountancy (IMAcc) program.
“The MAcc program consists of countless opportunities to establish a network with prospective employers. By the time graduation rolls around, you have created enough connections to allow you to choose where you want to start your career—an advantage most recent graduates are not fortunate enough to have.”
—Taylor Zimprich, BBA, MAcc Accounting Analyst, Epic
When considering applications to the GMAcc program, we look for the following characteristics:
The admissions committee places some emphasis on a student’s involvement in activities outside the classroom, as those activities help develop the personal and professional characteristics that will support academic and career success.

Complete the online application form to provide details on your intended area of study, prior education, and work history.
As part of your application for admission, you will be asked to respond to four essay questions. You can work on your essay questions in advance by downloading them here.
We ask that you keep your essay responses to no more than six typewritten pages in total (double spacing and 12 pt. Times Roman font are recommended) for all four essays. You may combine your essays into one document. Please include your name at the top of each page.
Two professional recommendations are required to apply. These recommendations are submitted via the online application system, and must be submitted by the final online application due date.
It is not necessary to send official transcripts in order to apply for the program, if you are able to scan and upload your transcripts to the online system. If you are later admitted to the program, you will be asked to send the official transcripts.
You must submit original hard copies of your transcripts/academic records before enrolling in the program. Records must have a seal and signature in ink from the institution’s authorized official, such as the registrar or recorder of records. For degrees from international institutions, records must be in the original language of the institution attended, and accompanied by official English translations. Have transcripts sent directly to the MAcc Program Office from your schools.
A GMAT score is required to apply. There is no stated minimum GMAT score for admission to the program. GRE scores will not be accepted.
The test must be taken by the online application deadline, and within five years of the term for which you are applying. If you take the test more than once, only your highest score will be considered. Please direct the testing service to forward your test results to the GMAcc Program at the University of Wisconsin–Madison (institution code: 79K-2S-23).
For non-native English speakers, a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of at least 104 or an International English Language Test System (IELTS) score of at least 7.5 is required for admission to the program. The test must be taken within two years of your intended start term.
Please direct the testing service to forward your test results to the University of Wisconsin–Madison (institution code: 1846).
Applicants who have completed three or more years in an institution where the primary mode of instruction was English do not need to complete this requirement and may request a waiver on the application.
Evidence of adequate financial resources for the anticipated duration of the program is required for visa documentation by the federal government. An International Financial Statement is only required upon admission to the GMAcc program. This document is not required as part of the admission application.
The faculty begins selecting the candidates for interviews in February. An in-person interview is recommended, but telephone interviews may be conducted when necessary.
When you submit your online application, you will be asked to pay the application fee of $75 (international students will pay an additional $6 processing fee). Payment must be made by credit card. Admissions decisions will not be communicated to the applicant until the fee is paid.
If you will complete an undergraduate degree with a major in accounting at another university, you may qualify for a one-year MAcc degree through the GMAcc Program. If you meet the eligibility requirements for this option, you would apply to the GMAcc program through the normal process and then work with the director of professional programs to determine if you qualify. Please note that you must have some relevant internship experience prior to enrollment in the GMAcc program at the Wisconsin School of Business to be a successful candidate for the one-year GMAcc option.
Transfer credits are not available. The GMAcc program is a two-year, full-time, 54-credit program, and we are unable to transfer in credits.
Course waivers are not available. The GMAcc program is a two-year, full-time, 54-credit program, and we are unable to waive any of the non-business courses that are a required part of the curriculum.
If you wish to become eligible to sit for the CPA exam and do not have a background or previous education in accounting, the GMAcc program at the Wisconsin School of Business is likely to be a good option. If you have already completed an accounting undergraduate degree and you have been working in the profession for several years, you may want to consider enrolling in the University of Wisconsin–Madison as a non-degree seeking student to complete the accounting-specific credits necessary to be eligible for the CPA exam. If you are unsure which path would be best, please feel free to contact the MAcc Program Office for assistance.
The University of Wisconsin–Madison offers campus tours and other resources to help you plan your visit. Details are available from Campus and Visitor Relations. If you’re planning a trip to campus, please contact the MAcc Program Office to schedule a time to meet with us at Grainger Hall, home of the Wisconsin School of Business.
Please review the current tuition and fees, as well as financial support sources for GMAcc.
